No. 10 OAK KNOLL ADVANCES IN UCT

By FRED SIEGLE
10/14/06: RAHWAY - Oak Knoll was down 24-19 in the third game when coach Jennifer
Larasa sent sophomore Jenn Korman in to serve.Even setter Jackie Gabela had to admit her team's chances didn't look good. "I'm not going to lie, I was doubtful,'' Gabela said. But Korman served five straight points, all tough serves with one ace included and the others all leading to New Providence errors, to tie the game. After the teams traded side outs, Gabela served an ace of her own to give the Royals a 26-25 lead. Sam Baker then blocked a hit from on the right side to start a celebration as the 10-seeded Royals had a hard-fought 25-19, 22-25, 27-25 victory over No. 7 New Providence in the Union County Tournament on Saturday at the Rahway Recreation Center.

Paramus Tournament Recap

By FRED SIEGLE

9/17/06 - Coach Maria Elena Bellinger didn't think her team was playing at the level it should have been in the first couple weeks of the 2006 girls volleyball season. That all changed on Saturday at the Jersey Classic.

Paramus, the defending state champions, finished second at the 20-team tournament, losing in three games in the final to New York state power Burnt Hills High School.

"I'm pleased with how we did,'' Bellinger said. "My frustration with my team up until now was that my returning players weren't playing with the same confidence we had at the end of last year. At this tournament, I felt we got back to where we were, the way we're capable of playing this year.'' Paramus went 7-1 to finish first in its 5-team pool and was the second seed in the 8-team Gold playoff bracket. It beat seventh-seeded Newark East Side 28-26 in the quarterfinals, then beat No. 3 Westfield 25-18 in the semis before losing 21-16, 13-21, 9-21 to Burnt Hills in the final.
