Cheers Men's League Final: Avengers Repeat as Champs
Although there were some new faces on both sides of the net this season, the Avengers were able to take down Guapos in the finals for the second season in a row and claim the illustrious back-to-back Cheers Champ Title; becoming the first team in the six season existence to accomplish that feat.
Although the Avengers did not return two of their top players from last season, Marvin Germar and Nick Mellina, the pick up of Damon Spivey to round out their six with the returning 5 players turned out to be huge.
The Avengers did not make a lot of noise during the regular season, finishing with a record on 19-11; 5 games behind the regular season champs Guapos. The Guapos looked primed and ready to avenge last season's loss in the finals but the absence of Paul Capar proved to be large in this one. Let's see how last night's postseason play played out.
In semifinal action the Guapos took care of the 4th seeded Gents with relative ease in a straight set victory by the score of 25-16,25-21. They awaited the winner of New Friends and Avengers to see their foe in the finals.
The much anticipated rematch from last year's finals almost ended up being non-existent. New Friends raced out early and stole the first set 25-20. But after some regrouping the Avengers came back and were able to take the next two 25-16,15-9.
In the finals it was the Avengers who struck first by winning the first set 25-18. The Guapos came back to win the second set 25-21 and force a much anticipated third set for the second year in a row. In the third at the turn the Avengers switched sides with an 8-4 lead and they didn't look back from there, winning the third set 15-8 and capturing the title.
Congrats to Chris Darcy, Glen Terry, Tom Zarebczan, Bob Curran, Sean Mackey and Damon Spivey on the championship. Thank you to everyone who participated this season and helped to make a great second year of Cheers Volleyball Leagues. Enjoy your summer and we at PowerZone hope to see everyone back in the fall. Cheers!
Men's 6's Playoff Preview
4 teams enter, only 1 will emerge as champion for the spring season of the Cheers Volleyball Men's Sixes League at PowerZone. Guapos took the regular season title by 5 games over the Avengers with a 24-6 overall record. They enter the playoffs as the top seed, followed by last year's champs the Avengers. #1 Guapos vs. #4 Gents - 8:30pm
Guapos won the regular season series against the Gents 7-2. They are led by the top blocker in the league Nick Serpico and a balanced attack that features the top 4 leaders in kills on the season, with 81 by Jack Henriques leading all of them. The Gents will look to make a difference with Myles Eustace; one of only two players in the league to finish in the top five in both kills and blocks.
#2 Avengers vs. #3 New Friends - 8:30pm
Avengers won the season series against New Friends 7-2 but both of their losses were only by two points each. The Avengers had 3 players in the top 10 in kills and had the league leader in aces in Sean Mackey with 19. New Friends was led in the regular by Javier Garcia and his 32 kills.

Men's Sixes Spring Season Preview
For the final time until the fall we will be holding our Men's Sixes league on Wednesday nights starting April 23rd. Due to an inability to commit from some teams this season will only be a 4 team league. But the twist will be a 5 week regular season as opposed to 8 weeks. Consider this season a sprint rather than a marathon, where every match will have a huge impact on playoff seeding.
Let's take a look at the four teams entering this season.
Last season's defending champs, the Avengers are back. But they are down two of the top five leaders in kills from last season in Marvin Germar and Nick Mellina. However they still sport a high powered offense and have what it takes to go all the way.
Last season's runner-ups, Trojan Men, come back this season as The Guapos and add a few different players to their roster. They are looking to bounce back from dropping two straight sets after winning the first in the championship match.
Our next team started as Igor & Friends, became Friends and are now the New Friends, adding two new players to provide a big challenge to their opponenents this season.
The final team in for this season is the Gents. They are back and with a couple of new players looking to bring back the spark that led them to a title last season and title contention almost every season.
Although the quantity of teams is down the quality is most likely higher than its ever been, making these four teams all have equal opportunity to win the title this year. You can check back here every Thursday for score recaps and stats.
