West Essex won the title in the Powerzone Girls High School Summer League, beating Morris Knolls 25-20, 25-23 in the championship match of the playoffs. Morris Knolls had been the top seed and West Essex was the third seed for the playoff bracket.
West Essex beat No.2 seed Paramus Catholic in the semifinals, while Morris Knolls beat No. 4 Montville, which had beaten No. 6 Hanover Park in the quarterfinals. West Essex had advanced from the quarterfinals with a forfeit victory over No. 5 Lakeland.
Paramus Catholic beat Montville for third place.
The teams had competed in a three-session regular season with two matches each session. Morris Knolls had gone 10-5 in the regular season, then beat Paramus Catholic (which had gone 13-2, with the only 2 losses to Morris Knolls) 25-21, 25-11, 15-13 to gain the top seed for the playoffs.
